Graduate Admission

M.Ed. Program Description

This program offers both full-time and part-time study with three terms per year.Two degree patterns are available: six half-courses plus a thesis, or eight half-courses plus a project.

The minimum time for completion of the degree is 12 months of full-time study or 24 months of part-time study. Normally, full-time students will complete the degree in 18 to 24 months. All students are required to complete the degree requirements within five years of initial registration.

Ph.D. in Education Program Description

The program is fundamentally a full-time program with three terms per year.

Students normally take courses for the first two years, at the end of which they complete their comprehensive examination and write their thesis proposal. During this time students are expected to meet regularly with their supervisor to ensure sufficient academic progress is being made.

The minimum time to completion is nine academic terms, and it is expected that many full-time students will complete their degree requirements within four years. All students are required to complete the degree within seven years of initial registration.

Fields of Study

Students must identify a major field of study:

Cognitive Studies

Examines the psychological foundations of human learning and development. The domain encompasses both the mental processes of the individual learner and the situated contexts of learning. It focuses on processes by which people learn to think, reason, solve problems, and make meanings.

Cultural and Policy Studies

Examines, from a critical perspective, the implications of the social, cultural, philosophical, historical and political contexts for education, in its broadest sense, and for institutional policies and practices.

Curriculum Studies

Includes the exploration of all aspects of curriculum, including the intended curriculum, the enacted curriculum, the learned curriculum, and the relationships among these constituents of curriculum.

School of Graduate Studies and Research

The School of Graduate Studies and Research is constituted to administer the policies of the Senate of Queen's University as they pertain to graduate studies. The School embraces all the departments and interdisciplinary schools which offer graduate programs except the MBA program in the School of Business.
