Outstanding Service Award

A sterling silver, limestone-set pin designed and made by Derrick Sleep, B.Ed.'02
The Queen's University Faculty of Education Alumni Outstanding Service Award is presented annually to recognize the accomplishments of a member of our alumni, faculty, or friends of the faculty, who has contributed to education through distinguished service in the profession or in the larger community.
Those nominated will be chosen by their peers as having made an exceptional contribution to education either at home or abroad in the teaching profession or in other fields related to education. The Award — in the form of a pin of silver and polished limestone, designed by Faculty of Education graduate Derrick Sleep (Artist in Community Education 2002) — is presented at an award ceremony which is part of the annual Faculty of Education reception and dinner held at the time of the University Homecoming each fall.
The Education Alumni Steering Committee of the Faculty of Education will act as an Awards Committee and an announcement of the winner of the award will be posted on the Faculty of Education website and presented at the Education Homecoming Dinner.

About the Designer
Derrick Sleep has the classic artistic/global personality - never sticking to one lifestyle for long. His career choices throughout the years have included newspaper journalist, freelance graphic artist, canoe builder, restaurant chef and goldsmith. Not until he began teaching did he find enough variety in the workday to satisfy his naturally short attention span. Derrick attended Queen's University in 2001-2002, and was awarded a Bachelor of Education in the Artist in Community track. Derrick is currently teaching Visual Arts and Science to Middle School students in New Brunswick.
"The Foundation Award began as a philosophical consideration of the meaning of Education in society. Clearly education is a foundation of our culture, without education, our society would not express itself to the world as we do. A quiet walk in a Kingston park on the naked bedrock shores of Lake Ontario one quiet Sunday afternoon revealed the way the symbolism of the Foundation Award could be expressed. Kingston is built of limestone, and it is built on limestone. The smooth gray stone is literally the foundation of the society. Setting the Foundation Award with a polished slice of real Kingston limestone encapsulates the idea of foundation and all it entails. This Foundation Award is set with a small piece of the limestone bedrock outcropping in the courtyard of Duncan MacArthur Hall - site of orientation barbecues, casual conversations between classes and solitary soul searching for generations of teachers who have gone on to build the foundations of our society in our schools across the nation."
