GENERAL BURSARIES

Concurrent Education (First Year)

 

Concurrent Education students may apply for a number of awards, including the two listed below, by completing the Queen's University General Bursary Application available online on the Student Awards web page. The deadline for this application is 31 October. The Mary L. Balanchuk Concurrent Education Award
Established in December 2005 by Mary L. Balanchuk, Queen’s Professor Emerita (Education), B.A. 1949, BPaed 1959 (Toronto), M.Ed ’61 (Toronto), a graduate of Fort William Collegiate Institute, member of University Council, Senate, and member of the Board of Trustees. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to a student entering the first year of the Concurrent Education program who was a resident of Northern Ontario on admission to Queen’s University. Preference is given to a graduate of the Lakehead District School Board. If there are no eligible entering students meeting the above requirements, then the award may be granted to a student in any year of the Concurrent Education program who was a resident of Northern Ontario on admission to Queen’s University.

The Robert M. Disher Entrance Award
Established in January 2001 in honour of Robert M. Disher, BSc. (Mining and Metallurgical Eng) 1921, by the John R.W. Disher Family Trust. Robert Disher is a life-long educator and was the Principal of Ridgeway Consolidated High School. This award is based on financial need, academic achievement, and extra-curricular activities to graduates of Ridgeway and Crystal Beach High School (Ridgeway, Ontario) or graduates of Saint John High School (Saint John, New Brunswick) entering into the Concurrent Education program at Queen’s University. The award is renewable for an additional three years provided the candidate remains in the Concurrent Education program, and maintains a B average, demonstrates financial need, and is involved in University life.

Final-Year Concurrent and Consecutive Education

 

Senator Frank Carrel Upper-Year Scholarships
The Senator Frank Carrel Scholarships have been established at Queen's University through the generosity of the late Senator Frank Carrel, noted publisher, executive and author who represented the Gulf Division in the Legislative Council of the Province of Quebec for many years prior to his death in 1940. Candidates for Carrel Scholarships must for at least one year prior to their application for admission to Queen's University (or for at least one year prior to 30 April if enrolled in an upper year) have been and remain until the expiry of their scholarship domiciled in the Province of Quebec and as far as possible in the City or County of Quebec or in the Gulf Region of the Legislative Council of Quebec as constituted at 30 July, 1940, (including Rimouski, Bonaventure, Gaspe-est, Gaste-ouest and Iles de la Madeleine). Several scholarships are awarded annually for general proficiency in the work of the previous year. All eligible candidates will be considered automatically.

 

Paul Park Mathematics, Science and Technology Education Scholarships
The Paul Park scholarships were established to encourage students entering the Faculty of Education to teach in the fields of Mathematics, Science and Technological Education. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and on the recommendation of the Mathematics, Science, and Technological Education committee. Candidates accepted to Technological Education or at least one of Intermediate-Senior Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics are eligible.  All eligible candidates will be considered automatically.

Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario Bursaries

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) makes numerous bursaries available to students who are entering Ontario’s faculties of education.  Bursary applications must be submitted directly to ETFO no later than 30 April (prior to September enrolment in the final-year Concurrent or Consecutive Education Program).  Refer to the following website for eligibility and application procedures for the awards listed below.  www.etfo.ca/BeingaMember/MemberServices/AwardsandScholarships/Pages/default.aspx

Johnny Biosphere Environmental Education Fund

The Johnny Biosphere Environmental Education Fund was established by family in memory of Dr. John Vallentyne, BA 1949 (Queen’s), PhD (Yale), who was a professor in the Faculty of Arts and Science, Department of Biology from 1952 to 1958.  Dr. Vallentyne was a prominent research scientist and environmental activist. In his persona of Johnny Biosphere, he appeared before thousands of school children, teachers and environmental groups all over the world. His message was simple and direct: What we do, affects the Earth; what the Earth does, affects us. The fund will support projects or initiatives that promote environmental awareness among children. Teacher candidates (BEd students), graduate students, and faculty are eligible to apply for funding. Application deadline to be confirmed for 2008-09.

Marion Merritt Beardall Bursary (External)

This award will be presented annually by the Kent Regiment Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE), to a graduate of Kent County Secondary School, presently attending an Ontario Faculty of Education.  More information and application forms are available hereApplication deadline to be confirmed for 2008-09 (normally 31 October).

Margaret Craig Education Award (External)

This award will be presented annually by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Nu Chapter, on the basis of merit and need, to a female student who:
• is enrolled for full time attendance in the final year* of an approved education program leading to a degree, or diploma (*final-year Concurrent or Consecutive Education teacher candidates);
• demonstrates outstanding ability as a potential educator.

For the 2008-09 academic year, applications are due by 27 February 2009.

John R McCarthy Scholarship
Established in 1987 by John R McCarthy, BA '43, LLD '67, former Deputy Minister of University Affairs and Deputy Minister of Education for the Province of Ontario. Awarded to a teacher candidate who has graduated with at least second-class standing from either a three-year or four-year degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen's University who is normally domiciled in Ontario and is enrolled in the Faculty of Education at Queen's University in the fall session immediately following their undergraduate graduation. The teacher candidate selected will have displayed leadership in student government and student affairs, made a personal contribution to the life of the University, shown a fondness and aptitude for sports and displayed leadership and sense of fair play in athletic endeavours. The applicant should list two persons who have been asked to submit confidential letters of reference. Application by letter should be submitted by 15 October (in the fall of registration in final-year Concurrent or Consecutive Education) to the Education Registrar. Granted in the Fall upon registration in the Faculty of Education, on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.

OMLTA Helen G. Mitchell Award (Extermal)

This award is granted annually by the Ontario Modern Language Teachers Association (OMLTA), to honour students graduating from a pre-service Modern Language program in Ontario Faculties of Education.  The candidate must exemplify the attributes of a potentially outstanding Classical/FSL/International Language teacher.  Nominations must only be submitted by the language instructor at the Faculty of Education; no applications are required from teacher candidates.

 

IN COURSE AWARDS

Final-Year Teacher Candidates Wishing to Broaden their Studies in an International Environment

 

Bamji International Practicum Placement Award
Established in November 2004 by Dr. Pervez (Perry) and Mrs. Annamaria Bamji to promote goodwill and understanding amongst students participating in international study. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to support a final year full-time Concurrent Education student in the Faculty of Education, wishing to broaden their studies in the international environment. The award may be used for travel expenses, living expenses, and academic fees payable to Queen’s University and to other academic institutions in connection with the studies undertaken. The application process is comprised of two stages: 1) a financial statement submitted in September to Student Awards to determine eligibility 2) a proposal and application submitted in November to Education Career Services, Faculty of Education. At the end of their international practicum placement, award recipients are expected submit a report or paper outlining the results of their studies abroad.

Charles Martyn Elliott and Kathleen Mead Elliott Award for Travel Fellowships in Education
Established in memory of Charles Martyn Elliott (Arts '44, and the first Superintendent of Schools in the City of Oshawa) and Kathleen Mead Elliott (Arts '42, and a member of the executive of the Queen's Summer School Association) by a bequest from the estate of Kathleen Mead Elliott. Elliott Travel Fellowships for study outside Canada in the field of teacher education, pedagogy, or a related field are awarded to teacher candidates enrolled in the Faculty of Education. Fellowships may be used for travel expenses, living expenses, and academic fees payable to Queen's University and to other academic institutions in connection with the studies undertaken. The application process is comprised of two stages: 1) a financial statement submitted in September to Student Awards to determine eligibility 2) a proposal and application submitted in November to Education Career Services, Faculty of Education. Preference is given for small budget, high impact proposals. At the end of their international practicum placement, award recipients are expected submit a report or paper outlining the results of their studies abroad.

Upitis International Study Award
Awarded annually to full-time students in teacher education and graduate programs enrolled in any Faculty of Education program wishing to broaden their studies in the international environment. Awarded on the basis of financial need, academic achievement and involvement in extra curricular activities, preferably volunteer work for humanitarian causes. The application process is comprised of two stages: 1) a financial statement submitted in September to Student Awards to determine eligibility 2) a proposal and application submitted in November to Education Career Services, Faculty of Education.

 

GRADUATION AWARDS

For the Awards listed below, no application is required.  Each award is granted annually by Education Faculty Board on the recommendation of instructors.

A Lorne Cassidy Award
Established by the Rideau Chapter #523, Council for Exceptional Children, in memory of A Lorne Cassidy, BA(Queen's) and BEd, MEd (Toronto). Awarded to the graduating student who best displays outstanding talents and interests in the education of exceptional children during his or her program of studies at the Faculty of Education. 

LW Copp Award
Awarded to the graduating Primary-Junior student with high overall achievement and who demonstrates the qualities of an exemplary primary educator. 

Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) Faculty of Education Award

Awarded by ETFO to a graduating PJ student.  The recipient must demonstrate academic excellence in their education courses, exemplary teaching practices in practicum placements, and initiative to broaden personal experience in educational culture.  The recipient is recommended by both the practicum supervisor and associate teacher. 

Frank J Fowler Award
Established by the Frontenac-Lennox and Addington County Roman Catholic Separate School Board in recognition of Frank J Fowler, a distinguished teacher in primary education and educational leader. Awarded to the graduating Primary-Junior student who best demonstrates the qualities of an exemplary primary educator. The award will be made on the basis of high academic achievement, outstanding performance in the practicum, and positive contribution to student life in the Faculty of Education.

DE Loney Prize
Established in honour of Professor DE Loney, an untiring contributor to the development of technological education in the province of Ontario, through the generosity of many teachers and supporters of Technological Studies education from across the province. Awarded to the graduating Technological Education student who has shown the most outstanding qualities of character and scholarship and demonstrated potential as a teacher. 

OECTA Award
Established in October 2004 by the Ontario English Catholic Teacher's Association.  Awarded to the graduating student who has demonstrated academic excellence in one or more of the courses preparing candidates to teach in Ontario Roman Catholic Schools: EDST 456, A Study of the Religious Education Program in the Roman Catholic Schools of Ontario; FOUN 416, Catholic Education. Awarded annually by OECTA on the recommendation of Education Faculty Board.

John Deakin Buckley Walton Excellence in Student Teaching Award
Established by a bequest from the estate of John Deakin Buckley Walton. Awarded to the graduating Intermediate-Secondary or Technological Education student who has demonstrated excellence in student teaching.  Awarded annually by Education Faculty Board on the recommendation of instructors.

John Watson Award

Awarded to the graduating Primary-Junior student who has demonstrated excellence in student teaching.  Awarded annually by Education Faculty Board on the recommendation of instructors.

 

GRADUATION AWARDS

For the Awards listed below, an application is required.

 

Phyliss M. Beatty Memorial Award (External)

This award will be granted annually by the Ontario Alpha Delta Kappa Lambda Chapter to a female teacher candidate who is graduating from the Faculty of Education at Queen's University, and is a graduate of a high school in the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board.  The application deadline is 30 June. FD Sawyer Memorial Award (OSSTF)

Awarded annually by OSSTF on the recommendation of Education Faculty Board, to the Intermediate-Senior teacher candidate who has shown the most outstanding qualities of scholarship, teaching ability and character. The F D Sawyer Memorial Award was established in the memory of Frank D Sawyer who was a member of the Provincial Executive during some of its most stirring years from 1952 to 1959 and President of OSSTF in 1954. At the time of his death in 1960 he was principal of Petrolia District High School. Mr. Sawyer's great contribution to Federation lay in his ability to discover the basic issues in the many difficulties which arose in teacher-board relationships during his term of office and in his having a sense of humour in periods of crisis. Awarded to the Intermediate-Senior student who has shown the most outstanding qualities of scholarships, teaching ability and character.  Completed applications must be submitted to the Education Registrar's Office (A112) no later than 25 April.  Click here for application forms.
