Financial Support, Fees, and Awards

Ph.D. Students

Queen's University has a minimum funding guarantee for eligible full-time doctoral students of $18,000 per year during the first four years of the doctoral program. The average funding level for Ph.D. students over the past couple of years has been approximately $24,000 per year for four years, renewed each year based on full-time status and satisfactory progression through the program. This funding is made up of: provincial and national fellowships, research and/or teaching assistantships, as well as awards and bursaries. We strongly urge you to investigate all sources of support for which you may be eligible.

Full-time international students who are offered admission into the Ph.D. program will receive an additional, annual bursary of $5,000 in each of the first 4 years of the doctoral program while registered as a full-time student. This will effectively reduce the international tuition fees to approximately the same level as that paid by students with Canadian or landed immigrant status.

First year Ph.D. students who hold a SSHRC upon initial registration in the Ph.D. program will receive $5,000 top up from the School of Graduate Studies. All applicants to the Ph.D. program whose applications are complete and accepted before March 1st are automatically considered for university fellowships.

In addition to university funding, the following external agencies have support available for graduate students. Please check these websites for eligibility and application requirements.
